Because of our experience of the declining abilities of incoming students, we gathered and analysed
the Leaving Certificate data from 1991 to 2006 and have found a massive increase in the levels of
higher grades being awarded by the State Examinations Commission. Our results are available
here. It being second level, there was quite a media furore (and a few threatening phonecalls) over these findings, spurring the SEC to issue denials of a decline in standards. Perhaps due to the unprecedented scrutiny, this year's examinations have reportedly seen a levelling off of grade increases, although we have yet to update our data and analysis. |
